Refinishing Old Maple Kitchen Chairs

I have 50 year old villas maple chairs that need refinishing and are loose in the joints. The glued dowels have nails driven in them to hold them in place. The glue is gone with time but if I knock the joints apart the nails split the wood. Is there a way to get the nails out without causing damage.

  1. Unfortunately, this is just a impossible situation, especially when working with maple. What has happened is that the glue broke down at some point and someone tried to nail it. Be as gentle as possible; you might pop the nails through the spindle a bit more but could also cause the wood to split. Sorry, but there is no real good answer for this problem.
